The Bibliografia italiana di storia della scienza (BISS, Italian Bibliography of the History of Science) collects the history of science writings published in Italy from 1982 onwards: monographs, periodical articles, articles of miscellaneous works and book reviews. Articles published in monthly or less-frequent periodicals and publications with a popular or educational aim are excluded. At the moment the database contains about 58,000 bibliographical records.
About 900 periodicals are consulted, and thanks to the collaboration instituted with the Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Firenze (BNCF, National Central Library of Florence) and with Biblioteca della Scuola normale di studi superiori di Pisa (BSNS, Library of the Training College of Advanced Studies of Pisa), the cataloguing is always carried out through direct examination of the documents.
BISS is part of the "International Bibliography for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine" cumulative archive. Formerly managed by RLG-Research library group, it is now available via "First Search" at OCLC (Online Computer Library Center). Access to it requires an authorization number and a password, available to IMSS staff.
