Disney Channel Laboratories

Thanks to the cooperation with the Phineas and Ferb show on Disney Channel, the Museum of the History of Science proposes four interesting laboratories in the International Year of Astronomy. They allow children to learn more about the Moon and have fun at the same time.
All participants will receive a Phineas and Ferb kit (in Italian), containing:

- a poster illustrating the different stages of the history of astronomy and proposing a game on the Moon;
- an identity card of the Moon with its main features;
- the Acchiappaluna (Mooncatcher), a funny booklet showing the phases of the Moon in detail;
- the voucher to join the competition “Destinazione Luna!” (Destination Moon).

The following laboratories will be available from November 9, 2009 to June 2010:

L’osservazione del cielo nell’Antichità (Observing the Night Sky like the Ancients)
How could stars be detected in antiquity? Is it possible to measure the heavens  just with our eyes? Thanks to models and accessories, the participants will learn about astronomical measurements and how to use the astrolabe, an ancient instrument representing the geometric projection of the Heavens.

Il cielo di Galileo (Galileo's Sky)
An actor dressed as Galileo Galilei shows the functioning of the telescope, explaining his “own” observations of sun spots, the Moon, Venus and Jupiter's four largest satellites. He also presents the camera obscura, one of the first attempts of a telescope, and the optical bench, which allows one to experience how various combinations of lenses can work together.

Galileo e la meccanica (Galileo and Mechanics)
An actor dressed as Galileo Galilei shows the development of “his” thought, particularly focusing on the law of free-falling bodies and on its consequences on the modern physics.

L’eredità di Galileo. Sperimentazioni nell’Accademia del Cimento (Galileo's Heritage: Experiences at the Accademia del Cimento)
In 1657 Prince Leopoldo de' Medici and Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici founded the Accademia del Cimento, one of the first European scientific societies, in Florence. The laboratory proposes a fun trip discovering the fascinating instruments created by the Accademia for making meteorological and astronomical measurements.
