The Museo di Storia della Scienza proposes a very special voyage in time during
the court of the Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine.
Valiant upholder of knowledge as a means to elevate the populace, Peter Leopold becomes celebrated for
enlightened ideas about culture and for the innovative concept of pedagogy that he sought to diffuse through
out the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In addition, Peter Leopold was the Founder of the Royal Museum of
Physics and Natural History--the collections of scientific instruments now preserved at the Museo di Storia
della Scienza, which has continued the Royal Museum’s tradition of making scientific divulgation a primary
objective.
The evening’s protagonists will be the electrostatic, electromagnetic, mechanic,
magnetic and physics instruments from the age of the Lorraine. Dames and
chevaliers in precious epoch costumes will illustrate the instruments functions.
The visitor will relive the Age of Enlightenment and the playful atmosphere of the
seventeen hundreds “didactic evenings” thanks to the Royal Museum’s original
guest books and the magnificent damask and brocade garments.
The event is organized on the occasion of “Nuit des Musées” (Night of Museums)
2007, an initiative sponsored by the European Council that counts on the support
of museums from National to European levels.
We wish to thank the Rubelli Company for the kind permission to use the costumes.
