Herculaneum
Augustan - Third Style
This long frieze represents a Nilotic landscape with fauna and flora that were typical in that environment: in the centre, there are huts and small buildings of rushes and of brush, with palms and nelumbo flowers (a genus of water-lily), bordered on the left with an enclosure through which is visible an approaching crocodile. At the right, on a small island, a hippopotamus advances toward the water, where there is a large duck. |
