Particularly spectacular and convincing results
are produced by the vacuum in the bell-jar, such as the mysterious
swelling up of bladders which have been previously emptied of air.
The small amount of air remaining in them was enough to blow them
up, in the absence of atmospheric pressure. By reintroducing air into
the bell-jar, the bladders go down again.
