The exhibition is a sort of voyage, a compelling journey through the shapes of numbers, which unravels in great strides along the paths of history, from Euclid's codification to the thresholds of non-Euclidean geometry (19th century). After its first presentation at the Palazzo dei Priori in Fermo (July 30 – November 4, 2004), the exhibition is now hosted by the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza in Florence on the occasion of the XV Settimana della Cultura Scientifica (Fifteenth Week of Scientific Learning). On display are many wooden models of geometric figures, true transpositions of concepts of solids geometry, an evocative cosmological representation of Kepler's Mysterium, explanatory texts and images, and some precious antique volumes from the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza's library collection.
The link between polyhedron geometry and the codification of linear perspective renders this exhibition a particularly suitable companion to a new project of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, the Bibliotheca Perspectivae, a digital library on Renaissance perspective, which aims to satisfy the needs of a historiographic sector long considered an "appendix" to art history or a "corollary" to the history of science, but which is today increasingly characterized as a precise and autonomous discipline.
